동역자를 찾지 마세요(Do Not Pray For Ministry Partners) 많은 목사들이, 특히 작은 교회 목사들이 자신의 오른팔이 되어줄 평신도 동역자를 보내 달라고 기도합니다. 그러나 이는 지혜롭지 못한 기도입니다. 동역자를 보내 달라고 기도하는 대신, 동역자를 만들려고 노력해야합니다. 자질을 갖춘 사람이 와서 동역자가 되면, 이 사람은 자신이 목사에게 호의를 베풀었다고 생각합니다. 따라서 목사와 이견이 생기거나, 사역의 길이 막혔다고 생각되면 뒤도 돌아 보지 않고 교회를 떠납니다. 그러면 목사는 상처를 받고, 교회는 풍파를 겪게 됩니다. 담임 목사는 시간을 들여 VIP를 키워서 동역자로 만들어야 합니다. 그러기 위해서는 하나님을 체험케 해야 합니다. 인생의 의미를 발견하고, 예수님을 믿게 되고, 구원의 확신을 갖게 되고, 가정이 회복되고, 하나님과의 관계가 편해지고, 교회 생활이 즐거워지는 것 등이 하나님을 체험하는 것입니다. 이러한 일들은 성령님의 역사가 아니면 일어날 수 없는 일들이기 때문입니다. 담임 목사를 통해 하나님을 체험하게 될 때, 이 사람들은 신실한, 진정한 담임 목사의 동역자가 됩니다. VIP를 키워서 제자로 만들만한 시간 여유가 없다면, 적어도 ‘동역자’가 아니라 ‘동역자 후보’를 보내달라고 기도해야 합니다. 그리고 기도에 응답하여 하나님께서 신실한 기신자를 보내주시면, VIP 때와 마찬가지로 이 사람이 담임 목사를 통해 하나님을 경험하도록 해야 합니다. 그러면 기신자라도 충성스러운 동역자가 될 수 있습니다. 제가 휴스턴 서울교회를 담임할 때 안수 집사들은 거의 모두 저를 통해 예수님을 진정으로 만났다고 고백했습니다. 그랬기 때문에 저의 충성스러운 동역자가 될 수 있었습니다. I have about 400 pastors and pastor’s wives as my prayer partners. One of the most common prayer requests I receive is for God to send faithful and capable lay ministry partners. Most of these requests come from pastors ministering to small churches, However, I believe that this prayer request is flawed. Pastors should pray for lay ministry partner “candidates”, not partners. Ministry partners who are already well-equipped may leave the church without hesitation if they disagree with their pastors regarding ministry matters. They may feel that spiritually, they don’t owe anything to their pastors. When they leave, pastors get hurt and congregations suffer. What pastors need are raw candidates. When they find one, they need to help him or her experience God. Only those who experience God through their pastors remain faithful and loyal to their pastors. I had many faithful lay ministry partners when I was pastoring Seoul Baptist Church. Almost all of them confessed that they met or experienced Jesus through me.
